Photo of the day - 35

It's difficult to think about Orthodox Christianity without icons coming to mind, so here's one for today's 'photo of the day'. It's a copy of the icon that I used to see at least once a day while I was at Westcott House.

This particular icon has a wonderful story - some of which is here (though I'm afraid the first link in that article won't work...).

Icons are far more than pictures. They have been used for centuries to help prayer...they are seen as 'windows' to heaven, and a way to both focus attention on God and to inspire prayer.

They are 'written' rather than 'painted', and each colour, item and pose adds meaning and symbolism to the icon. When praying with them, one way is simply let yourself be drawn into the image; see where your eyes lead you, and 'listen' to what God speaks to you through it.
Why not give it a go?
