What happens to community and church when most people can't gather together? With that sudden possibility recently, the idea of this bl...

Holy Saturday

We remember Jesus having died on the cross.

This day, between Good Friday and Easter Day, Jesus is lying in the tomb.

It is one full of bewilderment, anxiety, incomprehension, grief and fear.

The silence of the empty tomb is deafening.

As we remember Jesus, we could pray the prayer he taught us:

Our Father, who art in heaven,
hallowed be thy name;
thy kingdom come;
thy will be done;
on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread.
And forgive us our trespasses,
as we forgive those who trespass against us.
And lead us not into temptation;
but deliver us from evil.
For thine is the kingdom,
the power and the glory,
for ever and ever.
Amen.

Or perhaps one of the collects for today:

Grant, Lord,
that we who are baptized into the death of your Son our Saviour Jesus Christ
may continually put to death our evil desires and be buried with him;
and that through the grave and gate of death
we may pass to our joyful resurrection;
through his merits,
who died and was buried and rose again for us,
your Son Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen.

In the depths of our isolation we cry to you, Lord God:
give light to our darkness
and bring us out of the prison of our despair;
through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen.

(Lyrics, in English:

Our Shepherd is departed, the fount of living water,
At whose passing the sun was darkened,
For even he was made captive who was holding captive the first man.
Today the gates of death and their bars as well our Savior has destroyed.
Indeed he has destroyed the strongholds of the underworld
And he has overthrown the powers of the devil.
For even he was made captive who was holding captive the first man.
Today the gates of death and their bars as well our Savior has destroyed.
