Today the Church remembers Thomas Ken...

Thomas Ken was a bishop with strong principles which he stuck to even if it meant there would be consequences for him personally.

For example:

He publicly counselled Prince William of Orange about his treatment of his wife, Mary.

As chaplain to Charles II he refused to provide lodging for Charles' mistress.

He refused to read out a declaration by James II, which granted more tolerance of Catholicism (and all other religions).

After James II fled the country and parliament declared the throne vacant, Thomas Ken refused to swear an oath of allegiance to William III and Mary II - and so became one of seven 'non-juror' bishops. (For this, he was removed as Bishop of Bath and Wells.)

Recently, several bishops have been criticised for giving their views on issues like Dominic Cumming's lockdown travelling, the Black Lives Matter protests, and the timing of reopening of churches.

Thomas Ken's actions are a reminder that no bishop is ever perfect. But, more than that, they highlight the importance of bishops with integrity, principles, and courage. (Which is perhaps unsurprising, given the promises they make when they are consecrated bishop!)

Today, I will be giving thanks and praying for Thomas Ken and for all bishops who have made their voice heard recently.

♫ Thomas Ken also wrote hymns.

Here's are a couple, as both music and prayer suggestions for today.

They're often sung in the morning: Awake, my Soul, and with the Sun

And in the evening: Glory to thee, my God, this night
